The focus this month has been on orchard maintenance, finishing processing, product development and preparing for another show. With eldest son Paul home we have had more manpower and also the benefit of his engineering insight. The orchard has been mowed and the weeds sprayed, the curtain on the trees lifted, this involves trimming the lower branches to ensure access and allow the sun and wind in under the trees. Then fertiliser was applied and older tree reworking checked and major cuts repainted. This work continues and along with pest control: possums, rats, rabbits and feral cats, ensure that we bring good quality nuts into The Nutcracker Suite to be processed.
We are processing the last of the previous seasons nuts, the last to drop, and as one of our tour visitors remarked there are 13 steps to our process before we begin to add value and package so that you get beautiful products to enjoy. Once our macadamias have been gas flushed with food grade nitrogen and stored in bulk bags in our chiller, they stay there until we bring them out to roast, slice, make spread and so on and this work goes on all year. We have been demonstrating our food products stocked by Moore Wilson’s in their Wellington store regularly and enjoy meeting people and the getting feedback and suggestions, a big thank you to you all.
We have developed a wonderful new gift, hand thrown wheel turned pots by Joyce Young filled with chocolate- coated macadamias and beautifully boxed. Joyce signs each pot and each one is an individual. Some are nuts with stem, some have a husk all are collectors items. Joyce recently won The Professional Ceramic Award at the Royal Easter Show in Auckland. She lives two kilometres down the road from us in an award winning garden and studio setting. She is famous for her wall panels depicting the natural environment especially sea life and for her native birds in particular pukekos and kingfishers.
She and her late husband Stan have been involved with us for many years. Stan, a beekeeper, used to have his bees on our property. Joyce is like streaked lightening always on the move full of vitality and an inspiration to us all. She is famous for her interest in people, her fantastic memory for people and events her love of a story, her knowledge of the local environment. In her 70s she epitomises positive living and is the pioneer tourist operator in Oakura having opened her garden for over 17 years and working tirelessly to promote other artists and gardens along the coast. Both Stan and Joyce are examples of the many wonderful, kind people who have helped us along the way.
Lastly we have entered into The Wellington Food Show in May 13 –15, so we are flat out preparing product for it. So look out for us on stand 125. More about that next time. Kia Kaha. Be Strong.
