April proved to have a combination of celebration and remembrance with family birthdays, Easter and ANZAC all occurring this month.
Celebrating is about honouring and observing a special occasion or event, ‘singing the glories of ’as the dictionary puts it. Some years ago our two daughters gave us a small plaque that reads: Life’s Too Short Not To Celebrate Birthdays. A timely reminder that the dedication and effort we put into the orchard and building the business must not be at the expense of all those things that make the family tick and recognise and celebrate each person’s uniqueness. I also love the idea that originated at the Mad Hatter’s tea party of Happy Unbirthdays, 364 of them a year!
Remembrance is about retaining in the conscious mind, or something which recalls an event or person to the memory. All around the country and indeed overseas, groups of Australians and New Zealanders stopped to pay homage on ANZAC day. We stopped to honour and remember to all those young men and women who gave their lives so we might be free. We re affirmed our pride in and love for our country. We looked back with countless TV and radio documentaries on the past wars. We dug up family photos and listened to old stories.
As the commemoration ode says:
“They shall not grow old, as
we that are left grow old;
We need to ‘retain in our conscious memory’ the concept of living each day to the full whether they be birthdays or unbirthdays, the idea that we not only need to live our lives but a bit of theirs also. Just imagine how wonderful our country would be today if all that human potential, all those talents, hopes and dreams had not died.
This cycle of birth and death is ever present in the orchard. The macadamia nuts are all about birth, after all they are a seed. All around the orchard especially tucked in underneath shelter belts are small pieces of timber in the process of decay. On these sprout wonderful little fluro-orange fungi. Joyce Young a neighbour and talented potter created sculptures featuring these little fungi and once again won the ceramic potter of the year award at The Auckland Easter Show! In the garden the autumn foliage is falling in a solid carpet under the Liquid amber and Maple trees, reminders of our fragility abound.
Autumn “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…” as Keats’ famous Ode to Autumn reminds us. A wonderful time of year where the light makes your eyes feel like cameras, everything seems seen for the first time. The temptation is to slow down as winter is coming but we can’t after all we are living two lives. We owe those fallen ANZACs to live life fully and with enthusiasm. So celebrate your unbirthdays, let your life shine!
