August enews August continues to have beautiful days - cold mornings and evenings of 3 to 5 degrees and sunny still days of 12 to 15 degrees punctuated by warmer wet weather. 'Spring is sprung, the grass is riz'.
Around the house, sheds and factory camellias are blooming, daffodils are out, magnolias are bursting, daphne and jasmine flowers scent the air. The birds are mating in earnest, their display calls almost deafening each morning. Every macadamia tree has at least one blackbird or thrush nest in it.
What are we up to in the orchard? Opening up the older trees by pruning out branches from the centre to let in light. This is done with a light chainsaw on the end of a long extension pole. Another bamboo pole with a hook on the end is used to hook and pull out the cut branches. Then the large timber is cut out and the rest dragged to a headland to be mulched next time the orchard is mowed.
Of course we are still picking up nuts as they drop with our harvester. And spring fertiliser is ordered and will be spread later in the month.
We are busy making display structures for the Wedding Fair on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of August at Burgess Park, an historic old home set in beautiful gardens and parkland on the outskirts of New Plymouth next to the Waiwakio River. Twenty-five businesses are joining together to display everything you need to make your wedding a successful occasion. emacadamia is providing the wedding favours. We are making examples of delicious macadamia biscuits, fudges, chocolates, truffles and coated nuts for the display.
