The month started with the Auckland Food Show held in the Auckland show grounds. As a family we really enjoy the shows. The emacadamia team consisted of Christine, Bill, eldest son Paul our webmaster recently returned from his OE and eldest daughter Janet who is a professional marketer both live and work in Auckland.
We travelled up to Auckland on Wednesday 4th and started to set up that evening continuing the next morning. Cartons of product had been couriered up during the week but the car was still laden. It never ceases to amaze us how many bits and bobs we need to successfully set up our exhibit. We like to bring a bit of home with us – river stones, fresh macadamia nuts as well as all the paraphernalia – tables, table clothes, stands, photographs, banners, product lists, business cards, aprons, sample products to taste …
Thursday afternoon was a trade only afternoon and we enjoyed the opportunity to talk with other business people and also to explore the other stands and meet with those who had exhibited in Wellington earlier in the year. There is a certain camaraderie amongst the exhibitors; everyone is very friendly and supportive. The coffee people fed us with the necessary caffeine fix and we thanked them with macadamia nut products. Others supplied us with crackers for our macadamia hummus samples in exchange we advertised their product. One of our Auckland retailers, The Italian Country Market in Cleveland, brought us a swag of rack cards to promote their business, a great initiative and we passed them out throughout the show. Media people, buyers, caterers, chefs, manufacturers, retailers, suppliers all approach us and we exchange details. The business card pile grows and the information kits go down.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday we are flat out as the Auckland public hit the show. All four of us are busy explaining, sampling, selling, answering questions, giving out trade kits, and exchanging business cards. Long lost friends, distant relatives are discovered. People we have conversed with over the phone but never met, we meet at last. It is both like being in a zoo as an exhibit and the greatest people watching event at the same time. Fun, exhausting, exhilarating!
Then suddenly it is over, the break down begins, exhibitors exchange products, bid farewell. The car is once again loaded; the overflow goes back with Janet and Paul to be brought down later. Christine and Bill start home to arrive 1 am Monday morning.
The Food Shows get us out there, let people check us out. They are possible because of the tremendous family support we get from Janet and Paul and from Christine’s parents who have us to stay and provide great meals.
The rest of the month saw several groups tour the Nutcracker Suite. We were assessed and passed for a Qualmark and ran two familiars for local moteliers. In addition Christine travelled to Auckland via Tauranga to support our retailers and follow up contacts from the show.
No time to be bored. Life’s pretty amazing.
