...December newsletter 2005... |
|
This is a month where the focus is on one hand, on endings; drawing things to a close, reviewing, yet on the other hand, on a growing excitement and anticipation. Excitement about celebrating Christmas, holidays, family time. Mounting anticipation about a new year, a new start: hopes, dreams, plans.
On the business side we were very busy with corporate gifts as businesses looked back and thanked people who had been good to them. Then of course our internet orders as people overseas and in New Zealand stretched out a loving hand to family and friends. And we had the pleasure of arranging special mini crackers for a local corporation’s Christmas dinner. These were made to go with their invitations and just made the perfect finishing touch to a lovely dinner.
People came to tour on our usual Sunday afternoons plus other times by arrangement, by just giving us a ring. As both Christmas day and New Years day both occurred on a Sunday we opened on the Saturdays instead. Chefs doubled their usual orders as people dinned out with a vengeance.
On the family front Christine’s farewell from teaching occurred on Wednesday 7. She had been officially on leave in 2005 to concentrate fully on our business. Seventeen years at Spotswood College and over 30 years of primary, intermediate, secondary and tertiary teaching came to a close. Although the farewell occurred then, Christine had ‘moved on’ long before, prior to Christmas 2004.
Daughter Claire flew in from Melbourne where she is studying medicine on Friday 13th for a month at home. Claire loves being home, she likes to stay here and gets stuck in to all sorts of jobs – mowing the orchard, cleaning out farm sheds, gardening, packaging as well as all sorts of household jobs. It is precious time together.
Christmas Eve saw the arrival of son Paul and daughter Janet from their jobs in Auckland so the nest was nearly full. Missing was son David still in London. We had a wonderful Christmas. We also have a family tradition of going out for a celebratory dinner at the end of each year. It is a time to look back at everyone’s successes both personal and professional and to acknowledge them and celebrate together. We inevitably look forward and talk about our directions in the coming year. This helps us all see the bigger picture and to appreciate and share in each others hopes, dreams and goals.
In the orchard work goes on: in field grafting of reworked trees, side pruning with a vine trimmer mounted on our front- end loader to keep the rows open, top pruning of younger trees to encourage the best shape and remove ‘sails’ that will rip open the tree in heavy winds, and herbicide spraying under younger trees to keep the weeds down and eliminate a habitat for stinkbugs that will damage the newly forming nuts. And the nuts keep growing in size, they love this hot moist weather.
Each tree has at least one nest in it- either a thrush’s or blackbird’s. At this time of the year the nests are full and the birds busy. A nest is a place of retreat, security, somewhere to snuggle up and be cosy. Such too is home. We wish you happy family times and security. Snuggle up and enjoy summertime in New Zealand.
