The month was dominated by the 49th New Zealand Chef’s Association Conference being held for the first time in Taranaki. We were sponsors and were involved in most areas. We put a breakfast pack of large grade macadamia slices into the conference kits, provided gifts for the mystery bus tour for partners, provided macadamia slices for the Global Chef’s Challenge, were featured in the Culinary Chef’s Master Class with Rex Morgan ‘Tastes of Taranaki Indigenous Cuisine’ and hosted a luncheon out at the orchard on the Saturday.
All this took a lot of preparation. Chef Jo Lock, Head of Hospitality at The Practical Education Centre in New Plymouth and local chairperson of the Taranaki branch of the NZ Chef’s Association worked tirelessly to make the conference a success. Aided by an organising committee a range of activities were offered to and enjoyed by the conference participants- including scenic helicopter flights, a culinary mastermind challenge, master classes with chefs Rex Morgan, Marc Soper and local celebrity Horse McLeod, a gala dinner and awards ceremony and the Global Chef’s Challenge.
We were flat out harvesting and processing new seasons macadamias, preparing sample kits, printing information booklets, packing gifts and cleaning out our big implement shed and garage to be transformed on the day to host our guests. Yes a real down on the farm experience! Our neighbour, friend, potter, painter and florist Joyce Young threw her heart into creating a wonderful centre piece on top of two stacked water troughs for the big implement shed. This featured the macadamia nuts, birds nests, ceramic fantails, river stones and foliage from our shelter trees and gardens and a water feature.
We had a large mural made of macadamia shell featuring our logo made by daughter Janet and son Paul on the wall, the front end loader of the tractor filled with ice and beers, the wheel barrow filled with ice and water bottles, field bins used as display tables, a large sheet screen for a power point presentation and most importantly the weather eased and we had a fine spell!
Daughter Claire over from Melbourne for a mid semester break between her medical studies didn’t get one. She worked tirelessly dehusking, cracking, packing, printing, making up sample kits, laminating, binding… We could not have done it without her. She was joined just days before the luncheon by boyfriend Chris, thrown in the deep end, who also worked tirelessly and became a very valued member of the team. Daughter Janet came down from Auckland on the Friday night and son Paul returned from Oz where he his designing a hydraulic arm for an iron smelter and we had almost the full emacadamia team on board. Missing son David in London.
And the food? It was great. Talented local chef Aaron Lock designed the menu in consultation with Chef Johann Tschurtschenthaler. Continuous canapés and finger food all featuring emacadamia macadamia products were served while Bill took groups down into the trial blocks in the orchard and Christine took groups through the factory. A great group of people, talented professionals, a delight to host. Many thanks to all for your interest and encouragement. A special loving thank you to my family, Joyce, Aaron, Johann and Jo, such generosity of spirit is an inspiration. Love you. See the following links for the recipes and menu.
