Visiting my daughter Claire in MelbourneJune enews 2005

June saw a steady stream of tour groups to the Nutcracker Suite.  Christine also went and spoke to several groups in New Plymouth. These activities not only let people get to know us but also educate people about how the macadamias are grown, processed and more importantly how they should store and use them.

During this month we were part of a new course run through Venture Taranaki in conjunction with Tourism New Zealand called the Catalyst Course. This course aimed to up skill tourism ventures and was very worthwhile.  It ran over 12 weeks and involved full day, half day and individual coaching sessions. It was great also to meet with other Taranaki tourism businesses and to share our passion for Taranaki and New Zealand. Some were primarily tourism businesses but others like ourselves were manufacturing, restaurants or service businesses with a tourism side.

A highlight of the month was a week in Melbourne visiting our youngest daughter Claire who is studying medicine at the University of Melbourne’s Medical School. She was on a semester break and we explored Melbourne mostly by riding the trams and trains. We of course were on the look out for nuts and nut products form the Victorian markets to the Gelo bars and specialty nut stores and of course the cuisine departments of the large retail stores all were photographed and often tasted.

We attended the Melbourne Food Show, drank wonderful chocolate delights at Max Brenners, toured the university and visited her hospital placing for next year, went to an AFL game, did the usual touristy things and had a bit of retail therapy. All a good break.  Meanwhile our eldest son Paul was in charge on the orchard and factory and did a great job even exhibiting for us at a Wedding Expo – multi talented!

As New Zealanders we often sling off at the Aussies, but the courtesy shown by young Australians to older people on the trams could teach us a thing or two. Bill felt quite neglected as Christine was regularly offered a seat while he was left to stand!

Getting away and then coming back allows you to look at yourselves and where you are with new eyes. We always come back to a lot of work but also with renewed enthusiasm to tackle it.
