The Wellington Food FairMay enews 2005

May seemed to be focussed around the Wellington Food Show 13 –15 May in the Westpac Stadium, known to most as ‘The Cake Tin’. Most appropriate. We were preparing product for it in early May and seemed to packing, packing, packing. Our daughter Janet flew down from Auckland and we drove. Team emacadamia consisted of Bill, Christine and Janet sporting new t-shirts especially designed by son Paul. We had fun for three days talking about and demonstrating our food products, meeting and talking to other exhibitors and people watching.

The Westpac Stadium is a great venue allowing exhibitors to drive in right next to their exhibition space to unload and load which saves a great deal of stress usually associated with such events. The North Port Events Team were friendly and well organised, encouraging new businesses such as ourselves and had put together a great team of students and other young people who made light work of hauling product and gear around the stadium and who worked hard to keep it clean. Congratulations to all.

The cheer of GO THE NAKI resounded at times as we connected with friends and people who had lived or regularly visited Taranaki. We were proudly representing the province as our logo not only represents the shape of a macadamia nut kernel but also the mountain, Taranaki, that dominates the province and was calling to those who have lived beneath it.

There was a real interest in our products especially the macadamia nut spread and our sliced macadamias. If you want to find out more about them and ideas for using them see our Cooking Tips page. It wasn’t work, work , work all the time. Part of the fun of these events is to look at and sample the wares of the other exhibitors and to swap product as each business introduces themselves and their products. With cooking demonstrations, chef’s competitions and lots of colourful people doing the circuit of The Cake Tin the whole event had a positive vibe and seemed to pulsate with energy.

One of the really wonderful things we find, as a new business, is the amount of advice and help other business people offer. So the rest of May has been full of following up on that advice and help. In addition we have been part of a new tourism initiative in our region attending a twelve week course run by Venture Taranaki called Catalyst. This also takes up a lot of time but is very valuable. We are working hard picking up and processing macadamias and we have had a succession of pre- arranged tours of The Nutcracker Suite, our processing facility.

So life is never dull and everyday is busy and full of challenges. We are looking forward to our son Paul’s return from a visit to South Africa. In addition to his tourist activities he will visit our wonderful friend and mentor Len Hobson with a gift of emacadamia products. Len is another of those generous people who have given so much of their advice and empowered us with knowledge. To all of you many thanks, your kindness and encouragement is invaluable and inspiring.
