November enews 2005

What a busy month! It started in the middle of the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival. The festival started on Friday the 28th of October and finished on Sunday 6th November and has 45 gardens in the official programme with 5 of these of national significance. There is also a fringe festival group of gardens and many artists open as part of the event. For the last two years we have opened for tours during the festival.  It is a wonderful time to visit Taranaki and you can find out more from www.rhodo.co.nz. You might like to come for the next festival.

Once again we had great support from the family with eldest son Paul coming down both weekends from Auckland and eldest daughter Janet staying the week as well. They worked as tour guides, helped mow, processed and packed so a lot was done.

We still had contractors in the orchard as after the shelter is trimmed a large tractor with mulching mower follows and although it mulches up most of the debris there are still large chunks of wood all over the place and of course an ongoing clean up job.

Christine gets asked to speak to groups and this month saw her at the Taranaki Hospice speaking to the out patients and the Hospice voluntary helpers. Several have since come out to tour. What a great group of people, an inspiration to us all!

Straight after that she went up to Auckland with a series of business appointments including meeting with research scientists about this coming year’s Research and Development projects.  Then there was another trip to Wellington to see chefs.

We also had the pleasure in hosting the Central Districts branch of the Tree Crops Association on Saturday 12th with members coming from Wanganui, Otaki, Hunterville and their surrounds and even a couple of New Plymouth members. We have been members of the Tree Crops Association for over 20 years but as there is no active branch in Taranaki and we are so committed to developing our own orchard and business, we cannot afford the time to travel down to the field days. So it was great to host members here. We provide morning tea, they brought their own picnic lunch and good conversation and fellowship abounded. It is always a pleasure to talk with others passionate about trees and growing things and to learn about what they are doing. Many thanks to Col and Mark for organising the trip. You are always welcome.

Doreen Berge a friend with a wonderful knitted product range of possum and merino wool garments held an evening at the New Plymouth District Council where her range was modelled. We also exhibited along with Cottage Wines. We hope to do this again in the New Year. Check out her products on www.possrimo.com, they are world class. We had fun putting our beautiful macadamia jewellery against her wonderful garments; they were a natural synergy, each complimenting the other.

Christine attended an all day tourism industry seminar presented by Tourism New Zealand covering an array of pertinent issues facing the New Zealand Tourism Industry. It was attended by over 50 other tourism businesses.

Tour group visits this month included a group of international students and their teachers, a knitting group on their Christmas fun day out and the Wanganui Porcelain Artists Association. The latter came for lunch, which we served out in the orchard. What talent and enthusiasm for life and what a joy to be with! We were presented with a beautiful hand painted china plate painted by Christine Handley as a thank you. It will be treasured and is much admired.

And the month ended on a high note, we won an ANZ Bank Business scholarship. This provides funds for training to improve your business. We have made a start with Christine attending an all day workshop in Auckland called ‘Dancing with Time’ by Robyn Pearce. So another trip to Auckland and more appointments.  We are looking forward to Christmas and some quality family time with three of our four children and enjoying being home.
