...September newsletter... |

September 1st is officially the first day of spring. With the mild winter we have had this year spring is early. The orchard is full of birds making nests and the dawn chorus is full on. The little grey warblers are a delight. It is amazing that such a small bird can sing so sweetly and with such gusto. Camellias, daphnes and michaelias are blooming even some rhododendrons!
Most spectacular of all are the magnolias Campbelli in the gully against the native bush magestic and 15 years old, Vulcan 5 years old, small yet resplendent in the purple, Iolanthe 13 years old and covered in cerise and white booms and Felix Jury 10 years old with crimson blooms the size of dinner plates. These last three are planted next to a row of palms in a garden between the house and The Nutcracker Suite.
Those visiting us admire these magnolias. One visitor came back especially to photograph the blooms of Felix Jury then forwarded a couple of photographs to us. Wonderful pictures! Many thanks Bruce.
The macadamia trees are also laden with flowers although only about 20% are open. The heady honey like perfume is especially noticeable early morning and in the evenings. The trees are also flushing with new growth loving the warm weather. Bill is applying fertiliser every 6 weeks and the spring rain is washing it in. Getting the nutrition right and preparing the trees for the job of producing their high oil crop makes for quality nuts coming into the factory next season. Excellence starts in the orchard, no amount of processing in The Nutcracker Suite can turn a poor nut into a good nut.
Mid month Christine attended a two-day workplace first aid course run by St Johns in New Plymouth. A neat mixture of people: men from Westgate security the Taranaki port, various engineering and transport firms, ladies from Stratford District Council and from a Hawera supermarket, Penny from a possum processing business and Christine. Steve the tutor was great, had us all enacting various scenarios, practising CPI and explaining conditions using as many participants as possible. We laughed so much it hurt but came away confident having really taken things in. St Johns has also developed a laminated wallet card that has the core knowledge for those first on a scene of an accident and those administering CPI, a great idea.
Another trip to Wellington introducing our product to more chefs and back up to Palmerston North where Bill had a conference to attend and Christine went down into the Wairarapa as far as Martinborough. We had several wonderful group tours and Christine spoke to a couple of groups including the Stratford Women’s club. We ended the month with the partners visiting from The NZ Taxi Federation Conference in New Plymouth. The last of the macadamias are being harvested for the last crack of the season. The year is flashing by.
