...September macadamia nut newsletter 2006... |
|
‘Spring is sprung, the grass is riz...’ goes a famous little poem, it certainly has. September the 1st is the official start of spring. The macadamia nuts are continuing to fall and flowers are appearing especially on the GT205’s. This New Zealand variety flowers and fruits over a long period of time and makes a good pollinator for other varieties in each block. It also has a thinner shell than GT 207 which has been the main variety falling until now. So the rats target these new macadamias and Bill fights a constant war manning the baiting stations each night.
The weather is unpredictable – ‘shitty spring weather’ according to Christine. Although there are periods of warm weather, overall it is a cold spring especially morning and night. We are very busy with Bill concentrating on harvesting, both of us de-husking and then drying either to bag and store or further drying to crack. Christine concentrates on cracking and water bathing. Every machine is being used and therefore there is a lot of cleaning down required also.
We have been busy with booked in tours and speaking to groups and we exhibited at a local tourism expo on the last Friday of the month.
We are also sending out invitations for a series of master classes ‘Magic with Macadamias’ by Chef Rex Morgan to be held in Auckland, Wellington and Rotorua in early October and preparing sample kits for those attending.
More beautiful rhododendrons are flowering around the property and the air is perfumed by Michaelea blossom. The tuis are possessing the flowering cherry and bathing in the bird bath, while male pheasants strut their stuff in the orchard block in front of the house. Over head the harrier hawks prowl keeping an eye out for the rabbit carcases that Bill leaves for them after a twilight shoot. And the possums are on the move targeting both the macadamia nuts and the trees. So more baits from the regional council and more journeys by Bill out of a warm bed at 2 am in response to Vida, our Labrador’s barks, she’s a great possum detector.
Daughter Janet attends the Devonport farmers market with our products, her initiative, flying the flag for us in Auckland. Christine travels up to Auckland to celebrate her parents’ 55th wedding anniversary and takes up products for Janet.
Fifty five years, what a wonderful commitment full of love and dedication to the family, friends and medicine. May they enjoy each coming year. Many thanks Mum and Dad for your continuing love and interest in us all.
