An extract from Brain Power by Dr Giselle Cooke from the Qantas 'In Flight' magazine republished in the AMS Bulletin May 2003.
Essential Fatty AcidsThe brain is composed of more than 60% fat and essential fatty acids in the diet are vital for brain function. However, impairment of essential fatty acid (EFA) metabolism occurs with age, alcohol intake, stress, diabetes, allergies, increased sugar intake and nutritional deficiencies such as low vitamin B6, magnesium and zinc.
A low EFA diet predisposes us to impaired immunity, frequent infections, mood swings, depression and senile dementia. Diseases associated with low EFA levels include multiple sclerosis, depression, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder, post viral fatigue syndrome, breast cancer and epilepsy.
Flaxseed, macadamia and fish oils contain EFA's which restore the double membrane on all our cells to provide a buffer against stress and oxidation.
