The Brazil nut, one of the largest nuts of all. The tree is a native to the rainforest of the Amazon Basin and has grown wild there for centuries. It grows up to 50m in height.

A mammoth mouse called the agouti with very sharp front teeth, is the only animal capable of chewing the tough Brazil nut fruits and dispersing the seed to enable the generation of new trees to grow in the Amazon rain forest. The nut tree is also dependent on a particular type of bee to pollinate its flowers. The bees, the agouti and the trees are all dependent on each other for their continued existence .World production of brazil nuts has been adversely affected by the destruction of the rainforests in South America.
