Almonds along with dates, grapes and olives were among the earliest cultivated foods, thought to be used prior to 3,000 BC. Almonds and pistachio nuts are mentioned in The Bible.

Centuries ago, almonds are said to have originated in ancient China and were carried via The Silk Road to Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.

In the 16th century Persians were emigrating to northern India, bringing their familiar foods and introducing new flavours. Plantings of almond trees moved westward to the Mediterranean region, where Spain and Italy became major almond producers.

Today the major producers of almonds are in Southern Europe, Western Asia, California, South Australia and South Africa.
