Today the major producers of almonds are in Southern Europe, Western Asia, California, South Australia and South Africa.

In classical times Romans presented gifts of sugared almonds to important dignitaries as well as personal friends. They also tossed almonds to the bride and groom at weddings as a symbol of fertility. This tradition still is common today.

In Sweden the almond is a symbol of good fortune at Christmas time. An especially good year is promised to the guest who finds an almond in their serving of rice pudding.

Almonds both bitter and sweet, blanched almonds, green almonds, almond meal or flour, slithered almonds, sliced almonds, almond milk, almond paste, marzipan and almond oil are all products from this ancient nut.
