The Brazil nut is one of the largest nuts of all. The tree is a native to the rainforest of the Amazon Basin and has grown wild there for centuries. It grows up to 50m in height. Many indigenous tribes used the nut to supplement their diet.

The Portuguese and Spanish introduced brazil nuts to Europe in the 1500s. The nuts were sent back with other new world discoveries. Dutch traders imported them into Europe in the 17th century.

Brazil nuts are produced mostly in Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru. The entire production of brazil nuts comes from the trees growing naturally in the forests as well as from wild harvesting. It takes around 10 to 30 years for a tree to produce the first crop of nuts.
