The pecan is a native tree to North America with its name coming from the indigenous Americans, the Algonquins meaning 'nut requiring stone to crack'.

Pecans first became known to Europeans in the 16th century when the Spanish brought the pecan into Europe, Asia and Africa.

Pecan cultivation was introduced into New South Wales, Australia about 25 years ago with great success. are in central and northern New Australia began harvesting productive pecan crops in 1960, and Israel's production was boosted in the 1970s.

The United States produces about eighty percent of the world's pecans.
