Above: Emacadamia is tucked under the Kaitake Range in Oakura,  Taranaki. Above image kindly provided by Roger Smith - Geographx Ltd.

The property is situated 3 km south of Oakura township and 15 km south west of New Plymouth City. Oakura is a small satellite town on Surf Highway 45 which has a very popular surf beach. New Plymouth City is the largest city in the Taranaki Province with a population of 61,700.

The predominate land use in Taranaki is dairy farming. Apart from a few selected areas around the coastal regions of North Taranaki , horticultural development is small both in number and in size. This is due in part to the province being exposed to strong prevailing coastal winds.

Our property is situated at the base of the Kaitake Range which shelters this and surrounding land from the cold southerly winds, helping to create a warm microclimate. Other physical features include: a temperate climate, an evenly spread rainfall of 1800 – 2000mm annually, altitude 110-125 m above sea level, free draining volcanic derived soils known as New Plymouth yellow- brown loams.

The original cover prior to European settlement was light to medium bush predominately broadleaf forest with few Podocarp species.

The property today is 20 hectares in area: 10 hectares of fully sheltered macadamia orchard, 3 hectares of exotic forest including pinus radiata and sequoia sempervirens or redwoods, with the balance in original native bush. It has the Oakura River forming the north eastern boundary.
